Island: The power of influencers

Island, the land of volcanoes, fjords, geysers. Anyone who scrolls through social media simply cannot escape the beauty of the island. The fact that Iceland, of all places, is now on the internet as a place of longing is part of an incredible comeback story. A few years ago, Iceland was bankrupt. But the power of influencers has gotten the island back on its feet. Northern Europe correspondent Christian Blenker and book author Berit Glanz, who has lived in Iceland for many years, explain to us how they did it. The two were on the road for a new Weltspiegel documentary. In the podcast, they tell our host Philipp Abresch about their amazing encounters with celebrity influencers, who sometimes fly over the glaciers in a helicopter, and about their own adventures in the icy water of the Icelandic fjords. Berit and Christian explain how modern tourism marketing works today and also how mass tourism has changed Iceland.
