An ill-advised action now has consequences for Borja Sainz: the Norwich City winger will no longer play for his club.

It was stupid for Borja Sainz: The Norwich City winger spat on his opponent Chris Mepham (Sunderland) in December and later admitted it. Now the offensive player from the English second division team will no longer be able to help his team. As the club announced on its website, the league’s top scorer will be suspended for six games.

And not only that: Sainz also has to pay a fine of 12,000 pounds (around 14,000 euros). The statement also said: “The full written reasons for this case will be published in due course.”

On December 21st, Norwich lost 2-1 to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Borja Saisnt stated that he took “full responsibility” for his poor behavior and said: “Spitting at an opponent is completely out of character for me and my reaction at that moment was unacceptable. I would like to apologize directly to opposing player Chris Mepham for my behavior.”

The footballer also apologized to his own team. Because of his suspension, Sainz will miss the FA Cup third round game against Brighton & Hove Albion from the Premier League on Saturday. He also missed the away games against Championship giants Sheffield United and Leeds United this month.

He is also not available for the games against Swansea City, Watford and Derby County. He could only play for Norwich again on February 11th in the home game against Preston North End.
