Japanese train operator consults exorcists over train drivers’ health problems

The Japanese train operator East Japan Railway (JR East) has consulted an exorcist because of health problems among train drivers in Tokyo.

The company fears that evil spirits may be behind the illnesses that cause repeated train derailments and other operational disruptions, so the company contacted a Shinto priest.

Companies have not yet found any reasons for the health problems

The phenomenon emerged in late 2021 and affects drivers taking trains between Mitaka in western Tokyo and Chiba. JR East analyzed the drinking water and air quality, among other things, to find the cause.

The affected team is responsible for the Chuo and Sobu lines, two of the busiest commuter routes in Tokyo. Around 220 riders are part of the team, which is stationed near Nakano Station.

JR East reported that in the three years leading up to November 2024, there were 43 reported cases of train drivers suddenly experiencing drowsiness and other health problems in the cabin.

Those responsible remain perplexed as there is no obvious factor in the working conditions affecting the train drivers on this particular team.

Some train drivers suspected that a soporific substance had been mixed into the drinking water in their office, prompting a thorough investigation into their work environment last summer. However, nothing unusual was found.

The exorcist’s purification ritual did not produce the desired result

In August, JR East asked an exorcist to perform a cleansing ritual and pray for operational safety. Nevertheless, five more incidents occurred afterwards.

To find a solution, the company improved working conditions, replaced beds and renovated the wardrobe for night shift drivers. Attempts to determine the cause of the problem are continuing under the direction of a company task force, which includes an occupational health expert.

“No common cause was found among those suffering from health problems, although there were cases of sleep deprivation or heat stroke,” a company spokesperson said. JR East promised to spare no effort to ensure the safety of passengers.
