Lower Saxony offers numerous holiday destinations all year round, but hardly any region combines as many aspects as the Teutoburg Forest.

Where to go on vacation with such a huge selection? Lower Saxony in particular has a lot to offer travel fans – beaches on the North Sea, hiking tours in the Harz Mountains and numerous half-timbered gems attract hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. But there is one region that combines many aspects that are important to vacationers: the Teutoburg Forest. The northern part in Lower Saxony in particular is considered a true paradise for nature lovers and those seeking relaxation.

The region impresses, among other things, with its varied landscape, which ranges from dense forests to heathland to impressive rock formations. A highlight for hikers is the “Path for Connoisseurs”, a 94 kilometer long hiking trail that leads through five towns and appeals to all the senses. Each place represents one of the senses: touch, smell, taste, hearing and sight. Numerous surprises are waiting to be discovered along the way.

For shorter tours, there are numerous circular hiking trails that lead through charming towns, historical sites and lush nature. The trails enable hiking adventures and invite you to explore the region from different perspectives.

Anyone who travels a lot gets hungry. Here too, the region is best positioned: the cuisine in the Teutoburg Forest is characterized by regional specialties. Local inns and restaurants serve traditional dishes, often prepared with locally sourced ingredients. The hearty meat dishes, fresh fish from the streams and the diverse game specialties are particularly recommended. Numerous farm shops and weekly markets invite you to try local products such as honey, cheese and freshly baked bread.

In addition to hiking, the region offers numerous other leisure activities. Historical castles and palaces, such as Ravensberg Castle in Borgholzhausen, are loaded with visits and insights into bygone times. Safariland Stukenbrock is a special experience for families, where a wildlife zoo and amusement park are combined.

There are also a variety of parks and gardens that invite you to linger and relax. The Flora Westfalica Park in Rheda-Wiedenbrück, for example, offers beautiful park landscapes and is a popular excursion destination for nature lovers.

The region offers a wide range of accommodation to suit every taste and budget. From comfortable hotels and guesthouses to cozy holiday apartments and holiday homes through to camping and caravan sites close to nature, there is something for everyone. Special offers for conferences, group trips or barrier-free accommodation are also available.

Teutoburg Forest is considered the “holy garden of Germany”

The northern Teutoburg Forest in Lower Saxony harmoniously combines nature experiences, culinary enjoyment and a wide range of leisure activities. Whether on long hikes, enjoying regional specialties or visiting historical sights – here every visitor will find the right offer for an unforgettable stay.

The Externsteine near Horn-Bad Meinberg are a rock formation that is unique in the world. The up to 40 meter high sandstone cliffs, which rise in an otherwise flat landscape, are considered a mystical place and an impressive natural and cultural monument. They are a popular destination for hikers, history buffs and nature lovers.

At 53 meters, the Hermannsdenkmal near Detmold is the tallest statue in Germany and one of the most famous monuments in the country. It commemorates the Battle of Varus (9 AD), in which Germanic tribes led by Arminius (“Hermann the Cheruscan”) defeated the Romans. The monument symbolizes the freedom movement and is a landmark of the region.
