When will California’s Great America close? 7 Signs the End is Near – The Mercury News

The countdown clock to extinction has been ticking since California’s Great America announced it would be closing its doors forever, without announcing an exact closing date for the Northern California theme park.

Will 2025 be the last season for Disneyland in the Bay Area? Will Great America celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2026? Or will the park surprise everyone and stay until 2033?

Parent company Six Flags isn’t saying exactly when the park will close – but there are growing signs that the end is drawing near for California’s Great America.

Let’s take a closer look at 7 reasons why California’s Great America could close sooner rather than later.

1) Termination of the rental agreement

The 112 acres were under California’s Great America sold to Prologis in 2022 for approximately $310 milliona warehousing and supply chain logistics company.

Cedar Fair, then the parent company of Great America, agreed to lease the amusement park site back from Prologis for 6 to 11 years.

The lease gave Prologis the right to terminate the lease early with two years’ notice.

A Prologis spokesperson said this Los Angeles Times that the company is looking for a partner to help develop a master plan for the property.

According to the spokesperson, Prologis has not asked Six Flags to terminate its lease early on the property in Great America, California.

2) Leasing options

Cedar Fair announced in 2022 that California’s Great America would close at the end of its lease with Prologis.

The six-year lease was originally scheduled to end on June 30, 2028, with the option to extend the term for another five years to 2033.The month-long winter festival in Great America, California culminates in a New Year's Eve party for the whole family. (Courtesy of California's Great America)

3) Six Flags-Cedar Fair merger

The parent company of Great America Cedar Fair merged with Six Flags in July in an $8 billion deal that combined the two companies into a North American theme park giant.

The merger may have accelerated the new company’s plans to close California’s Great America.

Six Flags has no new updates on future plans for California’s Great America or the park’s closure timeline, according to a Six Flags spokesperson.

4) Seasonal events are omitted

California’s Great America concluded its season on Sunday, January 5, after celebrating what may be the park’s final winter festival.

Great America has informed season ticket holders that no seasonal events are planned for 2025.

That means 2024 could have been the last year for seasonal events like Peanuts Celebration (spring), Mardi Gras-style carnival (summer), Oktoberfest (fall), Tricks and Treats (Halloween), and Winterfest (Christmas).

Six Flags has not announced whether seasonal events will return to the UK in 2026 or beyond.

Great America also announced that the 2025 calendar would run from April 5 through the end of October.
