Omar Marmoush, who is being courted by Manchester City, has once again underlined his value for Eintracht Frankfurt – but how often will he do that? At the start of the Bundesliga year, the Egyptian was the outstanding player in Hesse’s 1-0 (1-0) draw against FC St. Pauli, the long-standing relegation candidate.

The 25-year-old attacker not only scored the opening goal in the 32nd minute, but was also the driving force in Frankfurt’s attack and led his team to their first win after five competitive games without success. The guests thus consolidate their place in the Champions League and remain the first pursuers of record champions FC Bayern and defending champions Bayer Leverkusen.

Before the game in front of 29,546 spectators in the sold-out Millerntor Stadium, it was eagerly awaited whether Marmoush would even appear in Frankfurt’s starting eleven. Um, that’s it. It is uncertain whether he will play against SC Freiburg on Tuesday or even against Borussia Dortmund on Friday.

80

million euros Eintracht Frankfurt called for media reports for Omar Marmoush.

There has been speculation for days that the striker could move in the current winter transfer period. England’s champions Manchester City are said to be interested. According to the media, Eintracht demanded 80 million euros. Of course he makes a player in this category, said Frankfurt coach Dino Toppmöller before the game on Sky channel. “Today he can prove himself again,” he said of the now 14-time goalscorer in this Bundesliga season.

What quality Marmoush has was demonstrated by one of his previous places of work. He played for Hamburg in the 2nd Bundesliga from January to June 2021 for six months on loan from VfL Wolfsburg.

Marmoush is hard to stop

Marmoush had two chances in the third minute, each of which was defused by St. Pauli goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj. Almost all of Frankfurt’s dangerous actions came from him.

The Hamburg team, who are still waiting for their second home win since promotion and are stuck in the relegation battle, found it difficult to get into the party, but then got better and better in their play and created opportunities. The best was Morgan Guilavogui (23′), who maneuvered the ball over the goal from close range after a pass from Oladapo Afolayan. After conceding the goal, the hosts became stronger and pushed for the equalizer. Unfortunately for them: Carlo Boukhalfa hit the post in stoppage time.

Nevertheless: The Frankfurters seem more mature and were always dangerous. Hugo Ekitiké (28th) only hit the post after a mistake by St. Pauli’s Philipp Treu. Four minutes later, Marmoush did better. Out of respect for the fans of his former club, there is no celebration.

The second half began with an interruption. Because pyros were ignited in the Frankfurt fan block and smoke billowed across the pitch, referee Harm Osmers stopped the party briefly. After that, St. Pauli immediately got up to speed and had chances through Manolis Saliakas (51′) and Jackson Irvine (56′). Both teams now acted on equal terms. Eintracht were unlucky when Rasmus Kristensen (64th) hit the crossbar.

Marmoush leaves the field after 86 minutes. Was the departure his farewell? (dpa)
