Smoldering vegetation fire in Wellington

A helicopter works to put out a smoldering vegetation fire in the southern Wellington suburb of Makara on Sunday morning.

Fire and Emergency said it received a call from a ship in the Cook Strait about the fire at around 8pm.

Although crews were unable to reach the scene due to the terrain, the fire was monitored overnight until a helicopter could be called to assist.

According to Fire and Emergency, the helicopter is now working to put out the fire, which is currently still smoldering.
