Buckeye Chuck, Punxsutawney Phil give weather forecasts at Groundhog Day 2025

Buckeye Chuck, Punxsutawney Phil give weather forecasts at Groundhog Day 2025

Dayton, Ohio (WDTN) – a few days ago, some furry rodents got their day to sunbathe in the sun – or in the clouds – but some regional marmots had contradictory reports.

On Sunday, February 2, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, which meant for another six weeks of winter. But Ohios own marmot, buckeye Chuck, did not see his shadow, which meant that we would see an early start of spring.

According to weather experts, both rodents are very inaccurate, but the current setup would prefer Buckeye Chuck’s prediction.

“We are in a so -called La Nina pattern,” said Kristen Cassady, NWS Wilmington meteorologist. “And so this typically means for late winter, early spring over normal rainfall and about normal temperatures for us. And that is indeed what we expect when we go through the rest of the February to March. “

While science prefers Chuck, there will be days that are on the cold side as low printing systems work.

“What happens is that you reach the warm side of the front 24, 36 hours later. And so this leads to great temperatures. And these are completely driven by the trail of the low -pressure system, ”said Cassady.

Dayton broke a 98-year-old record and reached 66 degrees-on Monday you do not expect the temperatures to stay that way.

“Although we had temperatures that were far above the normal yesterday, we will see some chances of winter precipitation next week,” said Cassady.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Buckeye Chuck has a success rate of 55% in the forecast, while Punxsutawney Phil has a success rate of 35%. Who will be right? Only time will show it.
