OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – 6 News Daybreak has the headlines you need to know to start your Friday.

Election 2024: Last day for Nebraskans to register to vote

Friday is the last day Nebraskans can do this Register to vote for the upcoming federal election.

You can register in person at your electoral commission. Friday is that too last chance to request early voting be sent by post.

Also on Friday it is District 2’s turn public hearings on the six ballot initiatives what Nebraskans will vote on.

Officials want to hear the public’s opinion on the six ballot measures – all related to School choice, paid sick leave, medical marijuanaAnd abortion.

The hearing on paid sick leave will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., while the hearing on medical marijuana will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m

All hearings take place at the UN Thompson Alumni Center at 6705 Dodge St.

The chief justice of the New Nebraska Supreme Court made the announcement on Friday

Gov. Jim Pillen will announce the new chief justice Nebraska Supreme Court at a press conference on Friday.

Pillen’s appointment as current Chief Justice comes Mike HeavicanHe’s retiring next Thursday. According to a press release, Heavican sat on the bench for 18 years.

Four names were presented of pills to consider for the next Chief Justice: David JA BargenJudge at the 1st District Court, Patricia A. FreemanSarpy District Court Judge, Jeffrey J. FunkeNebraska Supreme Court Justice, and Ryan S. PostLancaster District Court Judge.

A press release states that each of the six associate justices represents his/her judicial district, while the chief justice “represents the state as a whole.”

The conference starts at 10 a.m

6 First alarm forecast: Frost, fire danger reported

Meteorologist Jaret Lansford predicts Friday will be a beautiful October day Frost likely at night.

“By Saturday morning, temperatures will have fallen below 30°C, likely leading to frost and some spots where there could be a light frost,” Lansford said.

It’s been 6 days with the first weather warning called for Monday and Tuesdaywith record drought conditions.

“Light rain has not improved the dry vegetation and with warmth and wind returning on Monday and Tuesday, the fire danger is likely to be very high,” said Chief Meteorologist Emily Roehler.

Nebraska woman sues McDonald’s over E. coli outbreak

A woman from North Platte is Lawsuit against McDonald’s in the wake of a reported E. coli outbreak in their Quarter Pounders.

Clarissa DeBock claims she was rushed to the emergency room with an E. coli infection after dozens of people in 10 states reported her illness nine cases in Nebraska. One person from Colorado has died as a result of the outbreak.

McDonald’s has since been removed chopped onions and beef patties from restaurants – even though they say the outbreak comes from onions grown on a farm in California.

“Other fast food restaurants – including Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, KFC and Burger King – I pulled onions from a few menus” reports AP.
