Maple Leafs vs. Kraken prediction, tips and NHL odds

Mitch Marner has been a constant presence on the Leafs’ top power play line, which will bring some puck luck in the near future. According to our NHL picks, Marner could score on the PP against a Kraken team he has done well against in the past.

My Leafs analysis

The Toronto Maple Leafs ended their three-game losing streak with a win over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday night and now return home to face the Winnipeg Jets Seattle Kraken.

The Buds have had the edge in this matchup since the Kraken joined the NHL in the 2021-22 season, with a 5-1 record in six matchups. Toronto is averaging four goals per game in these contests and has received plenty of help from its power play. In just six games between the two clubs, the Leafs’ man advantage unit has scored seven goals, a rate of 36.6%.

That’s a far cry from the current PP situation, as the Leafs struggled mightily early in the season, sitting at a low 9.3%. However, it is only a matter of time before the Maple Leafs have a man advantage.

According to Natural Stat Trick, they rank eighth in expected goals this year and fifth in dangerous chances on the man advantage. At some point these odds will go down for the Buds, and I think today’s game against the Kraken could be the deciding factor.

Toronto made adjustments on the power play after the slow start by splitting up the top unit and spreading the wealth a little more between both units. That change made the power play look a little more dangerous in the Leafs’ win over the Jets on Monday.

What didn’t change, however, was Mitch Marneris the role in the first unit. The game is still on the Markham, ON native as he has factored into all three power play goals the Leafs have scored this season and that looks set to continue tonight.

Overall, Marner has torched the Kraken in their young NHL life, scoring six goals and adding eight assists, scoring a team-high 13 points, four of them on the power play, in just six games.

The Kraken’s penalty kill ranks 16th in the NHL at 80% while allowing a goal in four of their last six games. So the Maple Leafs should have enough opportunities to generate chances on the man advantage, and at +200 the price is right to make it my best bet.

Maple Leafs vs. Kraken – Same Game Parlay (SGP)

Mitch Marner 2+ shots on goal

Auston Matthews a goal at any time

Maple Leafs money line

Since power play points cannot be used in the first leg of my SGP, I’m betting on Mitch Marner to score 2+ shots on goal. He has been far more aggressive shooting the puck this season, averaging 2.8 shots per game, but has hit that post in five straight games and has taken more than 4 shots in three of his last four games. The Kraken also average 29.9 shots per game. So there is an opportunity here.

I like it too Austin Matthews to score any time tonight. The reigning Rocket winner is only averaging a low 8.5% this season. That’s almost half his career average. (16%). Those shots are bound to fade, and he has scored six goals in six games against the Kraken over his career.

Finally, I’ll end the game by putting the Maple Leafs on the money line tonight. The Leafs turned things around with a dominant performance against Winnipeg on Monday night and will look to continue that play tonight. Additionally, this bet is 5-1 all-time when the Leafs and Kraken meet, with the Leafs outscoring Seattle 24-16 in six games.
