Legal assistance and other resources made available at the Fall Correctional Clinic

The Johns Hopkins Office of Government, Community and Economic Partnershipsin partnership with Legal Aid in Marylandhosted its Fall Expungement Clinic on the East Baltimore campus on Saturday, October 26, offering access to free legal services from volunteer attorneys.

Participants were also able to receive COVID and flu vaccines, as well as resources for health and wellness, veterans services, housing and employment opportunities.

In total, 132 people attended the clinic – 86 of those clients had cases where volunteer attorneys determined they may be eligible for expungement, resulting in the preparation of 243 petitions. Since 2020, Johns Hopkins and its partners have hosted nine dismissal clinics, where 1,190 clients’ cases were dismissed and 3,104 petitions were filed, saving clients $46,750 in legal fees.

“Hosting discharge clinics and resource fairs is an important part of our work at Johns Hopkins,” said Lindsay HebertDirector of Community Affairs and Engagement. “We believe it is important to help our neighbors because when Baltimore thrives, Hopkins thrives. We understand that giving people a fresh start is vital to people’s health and well-being as it enables individuals to build a better future for themselves and their families.”
