Smoke rises and explosions ring out as the Syrian army and fighters from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and allied factions trade fire on the edge of Idlib’s Saraqeb, seen from Ariha, in the worst fighting in the country’s northwest in years. HTS, led by al-Qaeda’s former Syrian affiliate, controls large parts of the northwestern Idlib region and parts of the neighboring provinces of Aleppo, Hama and Latakia. PICTURES
