New NASA images show alarming spread of lava on the island

NASA satellites capture bubbling lava on Reykjanes, Iceland. It is the seventh outbreak in just one year.

7th outbreak in a year

Die Recent outbreak began on November 20 and is part of a series of seven eruptions since December last year. Previous eruptions occurred on August 22, May 29, March 16, February 8 and January 14 this year, as well as December 18 last year.

Rachel Beane, a professor of science at Bowdoin College, tells “Newsweek“, that it is a fissure eruption: “A fissure is a fracture through which magma flows.” Even five days after the start of the eruption, activity has continued, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Service not subsided.

About five hours after the start of the eruption, Suomi NPP’s VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) satellite captured the night image. The eruption appears brighter than the Icelandic capital Reykjavík. NASA

Evacuation of the Blue Lagoon and 50 houses in Grindavík

Because of the lava flows, the Blue Lagoon and 50 houses in Grindavík had to be evacuated. According to the Icelandic Meteorological Service, lava flowed mainly in an east and southeast direction along the base of Fagradalsfjall on Thursday (November 28). The lava field has expanded somewhat as a result, but remains thin.

David Pyle, a professor of earth sciences at the University of Oxford, told Newsweek that such eruptions could last decades or even centuries. He warns of further escalation: “If the fissures run through Grindavík and then erupt underwater, this could lead to even more violent eruptions.”
