Tips to Combat Motion Sickness and Dizziness from Fyzical Therapy and Balance Centers

Do you avoid car rides, boat rides, amusement park rides, or elevators? Motion sickness affects millions of people, turning a good time into a nauseating ordeal. Is there a secret weapon to combat this motion sickness? YES. Our brain juggles and processes the information from our senses to keep us upright. There are three key senses that make this possible. 1. Vision: Our eyes constantly provide our brains with information about position and movement relative to our surroundings. 2. Inner Ear or Balance Center: It detects movement and head position. 3. Proprioception: Muscles, joints, LEs and the surface we stand on that detects our body position in space. Sensory mismatch: Motion sickness or dizziness occurs when these three sensory systems send conflicting messages to the brain. Examples: o The eyes say your body is stationary, but the inner ear detects movement. o Feet sway, but your visual environment appears stable. Do you rely more on vision, the surface, or both: Eyes closed: feet together, eyes closed and swaying? Narrow Base Test: Feet in tandem, EO and sway?
