For global justice: Pankow once again recognized as a “Fairtrade Town”.

Pankow will carry the title “Fairtrade Town” for another two years, thereby perpetuating its commitment to fair trade.

The district has been actively participating in the “Fairtrade Towns” campaign since 2016 and is committed to human rights, fair working conditions, fair wages and social commitment here and in the global south. These include, among other things, actions with broader support of the world shops, civil society and committed inclusion – for example as part of the Fair Weeks, which take place every September.

The state of Berlin and the districts of Tempelhof-Schöneberg and Mitte also bear the title “Faitrade Town”. The title recognizes the commitment to global justice and fair trade. “With this award, Berlin continues to firmly commit to promoting fair trade in the city.” We take our global responsibility seriously and act accordingly. “The heart of our commitment is the new Fair Trade Action Plan, which brings together all systematic measures to anchor fair practices both in public administration and beyond,” explained Michael Biel, State Secretary for Economic Affairs.

The action plan provides, among other things, for the development of an implementing regulation with binding criteria for fair trade in public procurement. In addition, public relations and campaigning by civil society is a central part of the plan. The implementation is largely carried out by the Berlin Fair Trade Alliance and the Berlin Fair Procurement Competence Center, which provide advice and training for the administration. A focus of the action plan is to raise public awareness and promote the consumption of fairly traded products. The digital fair city map, which shows more than 500 places in Berlin where fair trade products are offered, gives citizens a tool to actively contribute to a fairer world. The districts are also significantly involved in the implementation through the district development cooperation fund and promote projects that advance fair trade at the local level.
