Fall drama for Shiffrin at the home game in Killington

Fall drama for Shiffrin at the home game in Killington

Ski queen Mikaela Shiffrin unfortunately missed out on her 100th World Cup victory at her home race in Killington on her first attempt.

The 29-year-old American was eliminated as the leader in the second round of the giant slalom in the state of Vermont after a fall; she beat the Swede Sara Hector ahead of Zrinka Ljutic from Croatia (+0.54 seconds) and the Swiss Camille Rast (+1, 05). Emma Aicher (Mahlstetten) took 19th place.

Shiffrin, who recently won her 98th in Levi/Finland and her 99th in Gurgl/Austria, was 0.32 seconds faster than Hector in the first run and initially maintained her lead in the second run, then came to an end. Shiffrin had to be transported away in the rescue sled; it was initially unclear whether she had sustained any injuries.

Should she be able to start, Shiffrin will have a second chance in the slalom on Sunday (4 p.m./7 p.m.) to become the first female starter in the ski circuit to reach the magic mark – even a man has not been able to do this so far.

Their records have long since surpassed those of the great legends of ski racing. Ingemar Stenmark (Sweden) celebrated 86 World Cup triumphs, Shiffrin’s compatriot Lindsey Vonn (USA), who is about to return to the racing track at the age of 40, has achieved 82 so far.
